Is counselling ever funded?
Sometimes. Your employer may have an EAP scheme, some GP practices can refer to funded sessions, and ACC funds counselling for certain claims. It is worth asking about all three before assuming you are paying privately.
What qualifications should I look for?
Membership of a professional body such as NZAC or NZCCA, or registration as a psychotherapist or psychologist. It is entirely reasonable to ask, and any counsellor will expect the question.
What if the first person is not the right fit?
That is common and not a failure. Fit matters more than technique for most people, and a good counsellor will say so and help you find someone else rather than take it personally.
