DRAINLAYERS · WEST COAST

Drainlayers on the West Coast

The Coast is six hundred kilometres of road and not many people, so the practical question is who covers your stretch of it — Westport, Greymouth, Hokitika or further south. Say where you are and NovaPay asks accordingly.

WHAT IS DIFFERENT HERE

Hiring drainlayers on the West Coast

Some of the highest rainfall in the country decides everything about a building here — roofs, drainage, cladding and the size of the spouting. Materials come over the pass, so lead times are longer than a quote implies.
WHAT PEOPLE ASK FOR

What people ask drainlayers to do

Blocked or collapsed drains
CCTV drain inspections and locating
New stormwater and wastewater connections
Soakpits, sumps and surface flooding
Tree root damage and pipe relining
Drainage for a new build or extension

WHERE THIS COVERS

West Coast, town by town

Greymouth
Hokitika
Westport
Haast
Say the town in your request. NovaPay asks businesses working near it first rather than the whole region, so the quotes you get back are from people who will actually come.
WHAT IT USUALLY COSTS

$70 to $120 an hour

Typical New Zealand rates. Investigation is usually charged separately from the repair, and it is worth asking whether the cost of the camera survey comes off the bill if you go ahead with the work.
That is a New Zealand-wide range. What you are quoted on the West Coast depends on the job and on how far somebody has to travel to it, which is why the quotes come back priced for your job rather than as a rate card.
COMMON QUESTIONS
Is there anyone on the Coast who does this?
Sometimes the honest answer is that the nearest is in Christchurch or Nelson, and the quote should say so with travel in it. NovaPay asks locally first and tells you when it has had to look further rather than quietly widening the search.
Is a drainlayer different from a plumber?
Yes. Drainlaying is separately certified in New Zealand and covers the pipes outside and under the building. A plumber handles the pipework inside it. Describe the problem and the right trade will answer.
My drain keeps blocking. Why?
A drain that blocks repeatedly usually has a cause: roots, a broken section, or a fall that is too flat. Clearing it treats the symptom, so a camera inspection is usually cheaper than the third callout.
Who is responsible, me or the council?
Generally you own the pipes on your property and the council owns the network beyond the boundary, though shared private drains between properties complicate it. A drainlayer will tell you which side of the line the problem is on.
Can a pipe be fixed without digging?
Often, with relining, which is less disruptive and can be cheaper once you count reinstating a driveway or garden. Ask for it to be quoted alongside excavation where both are possible.
