How often should I have an eye test?
Every two years for most adults, and more often if you are over 65, diabetic, or have a family history of glaucoma. Children who are struggling at school should be checked sooner rather than waiting for a screening.
Are eye tests free for anyone in New Zealand?
Some are subsidised. Children and teenagers may be covered through school vision screening and community services, and some conditions are managed in the public system. Ask when you request a quote, since practices know what applies locally.
Sudden flashes or floaters. Is that urgent?
Treat it as urgent. A sudden increase in floaters, flashes of light, or a shadow across your vision needs attention the same day, so say so plainly in your request or go straight to an after-hours clinic.
Can I use my prescription somewhere else?
Yes. Your prescription is yours and you can take it to another practice or buy online with it. Ask for a copy at the end of the appointment rather than assuming it will be sent.
