Arborists on the West Coast

The Coast is six hundred kilometres of road and not many people, so the practical question is who covers your stretch of it — Westport, Greymouth, Hokitika or further south. Say where you are and NovaPay asks accordingly.

WHERE THIS COVERS

West Coast, town by town

Greymouth
Hokitika
Westport
Haast
Say the town in your request. NovaPay asks businesses working near it first rather than the whole region, so the quotes you get back are from people who will actually come.
WHAT IT USUALLY COSTS

$60 to $100 an hour

Typical New Zealand rates. Most tree work is quoted as a whole job, and the price is driven by what is underneath: a tree that can be dropped in one piece over open lawn is a fraction of the cost of the same tree that has to be dismantled over a roof.
That is a New Zealand-wide range. What you are quoted on the West Coast depends on the job and on how far somebody has to travel to it, which is why the quotes come back priced for your job rather than as a rate card.
COMMON QUESTIONS
Is there anyone on the Coast who does this?
Sometimes the honest answer is that the nearest is in Christchurch or Nelson, and the quote should say so with travel in it. NovaPay asks locally first and tells you when it has had to look further rather than quietly widening the search.
Do I need council permission to remove a tree?
Sometimes. Protected and notable trees, and trees in some zones or near waterways, need consent, and the rules differ by council. An arborist working in your area will know, and can write the report if one is required.
What about a tree near power lines?
That is specialist work with legal minimum approach distances, and in some cases the lines company does it or has to disconnect first. Say power lines are involved in your request and only qualified people are asked.
Is the arborist insured?
Ask, and ask for the amount. This is the trade where it matters most: the worst case is a limb through a roof, and you want that covered by their policy rather than yours.
Is stump removal included?
Usually quoted separately, because it needs a different machine. Say whether you want the stump gone or just ground down, since that changes the price and the access needed.
