How much does an arborist cost in New Zealand?

Arborists in New Zealand charge roughly $60 to $100 an hour per person, and almost always attend as a crew with a chipper and often a truck. A typical job comes to about $900, from around $300 for a small pruning visit to $3,000 and beyond for a large removal near a building.

That is per arborist, and a removal needs a team — a climber, a groundie, sometimes a traffic controller. Chipping and disposal, stump grinding and any crane or elevated platform hire are separate, and stump grinding is normally quoted per stump.

The low end is a small prune or a hedge reduction. The typical figure is one substantial tree dealt with properly. The top is a large tree in a confined space, dismantled section by section.

Why two quotes for the same job differ

What is underneath

A tree in an open paddock can be felled. The same tree over a house, a fence, a power line or a neighbour’s glasshouse must be dismantled piece by piece and lowered on ropes, which is many times the work.

Getting the wood out

A chipper that can reach the tree is efficient. A tree behind a house with no vehicle access means everything is carried, and disposal becomes the biggest line in the quote.

Proximity to power lines

Work near lines has legal minimum approach distances and may need the lines shut down or an approved operator. Both add cost and lead time, and neither is negotiable.

Whether the tree is protected

Many councils protect trees by species, size or a district plan schedule, and some are on heritage lists. Removing one without consent is an offence with real penalties, so checking is part of the job.

Three things that actually reduce the bill

Keep the wood and the chip. Many arborists will leave rounds and mulch on site, which removes the disposal line from the quote if you have somewhere to put it.

Do several trees in one visit. The crew, the chipper and the setup are charged once.

Prune before it becomes a removal. Regular reduction on a tree near a house is far cheaper over a decade than taking out a tree that has become a hazard.
COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT COST

Do I need council consent to remove a tree in NZ?

Sometimes, and it varies by council. Protection can come from a district plan rule based on species or size, a scheduled or notable tree listing, a resource consent condition on the section, or a covenant. Check with your council before booking; a reputable arborist will ask whether you have, and will not proceed on a protected tree without consent.

Is stump grinding included in tree removal?

Normally not. It is quoted separately, usually per stump and by diameter, because it needs a different machine and sometimes a second visit. If you plan to replant or pave over the spot, get it priced at the same time as the removal.

What about a tree on the boundary or the neighbour’s side?

You may generally trim branches overhanging your property back to the boundary at your own cost, but the tree itself is not yours to remove. It is worth talking to the neighbour before the chainsaw arrives — most boundary tree disputes start with work that could have been agreed in a five-minute conversation.

Should I check the arborist is qualified and insured?

Yes, and particularly for anything near a building or a line. Ask about qualifications and public liability cover before the quote is accepted. Tree work is one of the most dangerous jobs done on residential property, and an uninsured operator transfers that risk to you.
