TILERS · WELLINGTON

Tilers in Wellington

Wellington is hills, wind and old timber houses, and every one of those changes what a job costs — steps instead of a driveway, no parking outside, and weather that finds any gap in a building. Say where you are, from the city to the Hutt or the Kapiti Coast, and NovaPay asks businesses working there.

WHAT IS DIFFERENT HERE

Hiring tilers in Wellington

Steep sections, retaining walls and access by steps are the Wellington premium, and the wind loading on a hill site is a real engineering constraint rather than a talking point. Older timber villas bring strengthening, piles and weathertightness work with them. Say how a truck would reach the site — it is usually the first thing a builder asks.

WHERE THIS COVERS

Wellington, town by town

Wellington
Lower Hutt
Upper Hutt
Porirua
Kapiti Coast
Paraparaumu
Waikanae
Otaki
Paekakariki
Say the town in your request. NovaPay asks businesses working near it first rather than the whole region, so the quotes you get back are from people who will actually come.
WHAT IT USUALLY COSTS

$50 to $80 an hour

Typical New Zealand labour rates, before tiles and materials. Most tilers quote by the square metre for a defined area, and format matters: large format and natural stone take longer and need a flatter substrate than standard ceramic.
That is a New Zealand-wide range. What you are quoted in Wellington depends on the job and on how far somebody has to travel to it, which is why the quotes come back priced for your job rather than as a rate card.
COMMON QUESTIONS
Does a Wellington business cover the Hutt and Kapiti?
Many do, but the further ends of the region carry travel time and it shows in the quote. NovaPay asks businesses covering your end first — the Kapiti Coast in particular is served by its own trades rather than by the city.
Why do Wellington quotes ask about access and steps?
Because they are most of the labour. Carrying materials up sixty steps or working off a boundary with no parking is genuinely a different job to the same work on a flat Hamilton section, and a quote that ignores it is the one that gets revised on the day.
Is waterproofing included?
It should be for a shower or wet area, and it is the single most common difference between two bathroom quotes. In New Zealand it must meet the building code, so ask who is doing it and what certification you get.
Can new tiles go over old ones?
Sometimes on a floor if the existing tiles are sound and the height increase works, but rarely in a wet area where the waterproofing underneath is the point. A tiler will tell you after seeing it.
Who supplies the tiles?
Usually you, and it is worth confirming. Order around ten percent extra for cuts and breakages, because matching a batch later is often impossible.
How long will the bathroom be out of use?
Commonly several days once waterproofing cure times and grouting are counted, and longer as part of a full renovation. Ask for the days it is unusable, not just the days someone is on site.
