HANDYMEN · WHAT IT COSTS

How much does a handyman cost in New Zealand?

Handymen in New Zealand generally charge $40 to $70 an hour, most with a minimum charge of an hour or two. A typical visit lands around $300, and the way to get value from one is to have a list ready rather than a single small task.

TYPICAL HOURLY RATE
$40 to $70 an hour
Labour only, and usually with a minimum callout of one to two hours. Materials are charged on top. Anything that legally requires a licensed trade — electrical, gasfitting, most plumbing, structural work — is not handyman work at any price.
A TYPICAL JOB
$300
Most land between $120 and $700
The low end is the minimum charge for one small task. The top is a full day working through a list, which is how a handyman is most worth booking.
Both figures are national and GST inclusive. Neither is a quote: what you pay depends on your job, and the only way to know it is to have someone price that job.
WHAT CHANGES THE PRICE

Why two quotes for the same job differ

The minimum charge

One twenty-minute job costs the minimum, so the effective rate on a single small task is very high. Nothing else about handyman pricing matters as much as this.

Whether materials are sourced for you

A trip to the trade counter is chargeable time. Having the right fittings, fixings and paint on site before they arrive can save an hour on a two-hour job.

Where the task sits on the licensing line

Hanging a light fitting, moving a socket, altering a waste — these are licensed work. A handyman who declines them is doing the right thing, and the job needs the proper trade instead.

Working at height or on a roof

Gutter clearing, exterior repairs and anything needing a ladder above single storey carry safety requirements that slow the work and sometimes rule it out entirely.
HOW TO PAY LESS

Three things that actually reduce the bill

Save up a list. The minimum charge and the travel are paid once, so six small jobs in one visit cost far less per job than six visits.
Buy the materials yourself if you know exactly what is needed. If you do not, do not — the wrong fitting costs more time than it saves.
Be honest about what the job actually is. A task that turns out to need a licensed trade halfway through has still consumed the visit.
COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT COST

What can a handyman legally do in New Zealand?

General repairs and maintenance, assembly, hanging and fixing, minor carpentry, painting and patching. What they cannot do is prescribed electrical and gas work, most plumbing and drainlaying, and restricted building work that affects the structure or weathertightness of a house. Those need a registered or licensed tradesperson and, in some cases, certification.

Why did a twenty-minute job cost more than a hundred dollars?

The minimum charge. Most handymen bill a minimum of one to two hours, because the travel, the parking and the unloading happen whatever the task is and that time cannot be sold to anyone else. It is the cost of the visit rather than a markup on your job, which is why the same twenty minutes is nearly free if it is the seventh thing on a list.

Do handymen have insurance?

Many carry public liability cover and some do not. It is a fair question to ask before someone works on your home, particularly for anything involving water, height or your neighbour’s property.

Handyman or a specific trade?

If the task is squarely inside one trade and is more than an hour of it, book that trade — the work is faster and often better. A handyman earns their place on a mixed list where no single task justifies a specialist visit.
WHERE THESE NUMBERS COME FROM
The hourly rate is the range NovaPay uses across the site for this trade, and the typical job figure is the mid-market New Zealand price its assistant works from when it helps somebody set a budget. Both are the same numbers the product uses when you are inside it, published here rather than kept behind a sign-in.
What they are not: a survey, an average of anyones invoices, or what businesses on NovaPay charge. There is no dataset here large enough to claim any of those, so this page does not claim them. It also publishes no per-job price list, because a list like that would be exactly that claim in a more convincing format.
Treat the figures as an order of magnitude for planning. The real number for your job is a quote from somebody who has understood it.
