How much does a landscaper cost in New Zealand?

Landscapers in New Zealand charge roughly $50 to $90 an hour for labour, but landscaping is bought as a project, not by the hour. A typical job comes to about $6,000, with smaller work from $1,500 and a full section redesign running to $20,000 and beyond.

Labour only, and labour is often less than half a landscaping bill. Materials, plants, machinery hire, disposal of what was there and any retaining or drainage work sit on top and usually dominate.

Why two quotes for the same job differ

Getting machinery in

A section a digger can reach is a fraction of the cost of one where everything is barrowed through a gate. This single fact separates two otherwise identical quotes more often than any other.

Levels and retaining

Sloped sites need retaining, and retaining above a certain height needs engineering and consent. It is the part of a landscaping project most likely to cost more than the whole rest of it.

Hard landscaping versus planting

Paving, decking, walls and steps are construction, priced per square or lineal metre. Planting is comparatively cheap. A design heavy in hard surfaces is a much larger budget.

Drainage

Water has to go somewhere, and getting that wrong ruins the work. Proper drainage is invisible in the finished garden and is a genuine line in the quote.

HOW TO PAY LESS

Three things that actually reduce the bill

Stage it. A landscaper can build the structure this year and plant the next, and staging is far cheaper than changing your mind halfway through.

Buy plants smaller. Grade sizes are one of the biggest discretionary costs in a planting plan and the difference disappears within two or three seasons.

Do the demolition and the clearing yourself if you are able. It is unskilled time you are otherwise paying a trade rate for.

Do I need a design before I get quotes?

For anything substantial, yes — and it is the difference between comparable quotes and guesses. A plan with levels, materials and quantities lets three landscapers price the same job. Without one you are comparing three different gardens. Design is often charged separately and is worth it on a large project.

Does landscaping need council consent?

Sometimes. Retaining walls above a certain height, decks above a certain height, work near boundaries or over drains, and anything affecting stormwater can all require consent. Your landscaper should raise it early; if they have not, ask directly, because it is not a question you want answered after it is built.

What is the cheapest way to improve a section?

Levelling, turf and defined garden beds — the things that change the shape and the maintenance of a garden without construction. Paving, retaining and decking are what move a project from thousands to tens of thousands.

When is the best time to landscape in New Zealand?

Hard landscaping is easiest in the drier months and is often booked out through summer. Planting establishes best in autumn, going into the wet. Building in late summer and planting in autumn is the sequence that works with the seasons rather than against them.
