MOVERS · WHAT IT COSTS

How much do movers cost in New Zealand?

Moving companies in New Zealand typically charge $80 to $150 an hour for a truck and two movers, with travel time included. A typical local house move comes to around $900, from about $300 for a small flat to $2,500 and up for a large home or a move between cities.

TYPICAL HOURLY RATE
$80 to $150 an hour
The rate is for the truck and the crew together, and the clock usually starts when they leave the depot rather than when they arrive. Packing materials, extra crew, piano or safe handling and insurance are separate lines.
A TYPICAL JOB
$900
Most land between $300 and $2,500
The low end is a one-bedroom flat, ground floor, across town. The high end is a family home, or any move where the distance means a full day on the road.
Both figures are national and GST inclusive. Neither is a quote: what you pay depends on your job, and the only way to know it is to have someone price that job.
WHAT CHANGES THE PRICE

Why two quotes for the same job differ

Stairs and the carry distance

The single biggest variable in a local move is how far each item travels between the door and the truck. A third-floor walk-up or a long driveway can add hours to an otherwise identical load.

Whether you are packed

A crew that arrives to sealed, labelled boxes loads quickly. A crew that has to pack the kitchen is doing a different and much longer job. Packing is worth quoting separately either way.

Distance, and the ferry

An inter-city move is priced on the trip, not the hours, and a move between islands includes a ferry booking with its own cost and its own schedule. That has to be quoted, not estimated.

The awkward items

Pianos, safes, pool tables, large appliances and anything that needs dismantling are charged specifically, because they need more people or more equipment.
HOW TO PAY LESS

Three things that actually reduce the bill

Move mid-week and mid-month. The last Friday of the month is the most expensive moving slot in the country, and the same crew is cheaper on a Tuesday.
Be completely packed before the truck arrives, with boxes stacked near the door. It is the change that most reliably reduces an hourly bill.
Get rid of things first. You are paying by the hour to carry everything you own, and a trip to the tip or a marketplace listing beforehand is cheaper than moving it.
COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT COST

Is my furniture insured while it is being moved?

Not automatically to the value you would expect. Movers typically carry limited liability, and full transit cover is a separate product you can buy. Ask what the default cover actually pays for a damaged item, then decide whether to add cover for the move — it is usually a small amount against the value of a household.

Do movers charge from the depot?

Commonly, yes — the clock starts when the truck leaves and stops when it returns, or a fixed travel charge is added. It is worth confirming, because two identical hourly rates can differ by an hour of billing depending on where the company is based relative to you.

Should I hire a truck and do it myself?

For a small flat with help available, often yes. For a house, the maths changes quickly: a professional crew loads far more per hour, carries insurance, and does not put your back or your friends at risk. Price both, and count the fuel, the hire, and the day off work in the DIY column.

Is it cheaper to move mid-week?

Usually, and noticeably. Leases turn over at the end of the month and people move on Fridays and Saturdays, so that is when demand sets the price. The same crew and truck on a Tuesday mid-month is often the cheapest slot on offer, and it is also when you are most likely to get the company you actually wanted rather than whoever is left.
WHERE THESE NUMBERS COME FROM
The hourly rate is the range NovaPay uses across the site for this trade, and the typical job figure is the mid-market New Zealand price its assistant works from when it helps somebody set a budget. Both are the same numbers the product uses when you are inside it, published here rather than kept behind a sign-in.
What they are not: a survey, an average of anyones invoices, or what businesses on NovaPay charge. There is no dataset here large enough to claim any of those, so this page does not claim them. It also publishes no per-job price list, because a list like that would be exactly that claim in a more convincing format.
Treat the figures as an order of magnitude for planning. The real number for your job is a quote from somebody who has understood it.
