PLUMBERS · WHAT IT COSTS

How much does a plumber cost in New Zealand?

Most New Zealand plumbers charge between $80 and $150 an hour, plus a callout fee to get to you. An ordinary job — a blocked gully trap, a leaking mixer, a cylinder valve — lands around $350 all up, and it is the callout and the first hour that dominate a small job rather than the hourly rate you were quoted.

TYPICAL HOURLY RATE
$80 to $150 an hour
That is labour only. A callout fee is charged on top and is usually the largest single line on a small job, parts are billed separately and often carry a margin, and many plumbers bill a minimum first hour whether or not the work takes one.
A TYPICAL JOB
$350
Most land between $150 and $800
The low end is a single quick fix inside the first hour. The high end is half a day, or a job where the fix turned out to be behind a wall or under a floor.
Both figures are national and GST inclusive. Neither is a quote: what you pay depends on your job, and the only way to know it is to have someone price that job.
WHAT CHANGES THE PRICE

Why two quotes for the same job differ

Getting to the pipe

The repair is rarely the expensive part. A joint under a house on piles is minutes of work; the same joint in a slab or behind tiled gib is hours of it, plus making good afterwards.

Whether it is after hours

Nights, weekends and public holidays carry a higher rate or a much larger callout. A burst pipe at 9pm can cost twice the same job on a Tuesday morning.

Hot water cylinders

A valve or an element is a parts-and-labour job. A full cylinder replacement is a different order of magnitude, and an electric-to-gas or a mains-pressure conversion adds a gasfitter or an electrician to the day.

Whether gas is involved

Gasfitting is separately certified in New Zealand. If the job needs it and your plumber does not hold it, a second trade has to attend, and each one brings a callout.
HOW TO PAY LESS

Three things that actually reduce the bill

Bundle the small jobs. The callout is charged once. A dripping tap, a running toilet and a stiff outdoor valve done in one visit cost far less than three visits.
Say what you can see, precisely — which fitting, how fast the leak, whether it is clean or foul water. A plumber who arrives with the right part does not charge you for the trip to get it.
Ask whether the job can wait until ordinary hours. If it can be isolated at the toby, waiting until morning often halves the bill.
COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT COST

What is a plumber’s callout fee in NZ?

It is the charge for attending, separate from the hourly rate, and it exists because the travel and the vehicle are real costs whether the job takes five minutes or five hours. Some plumbers fold it into a higher first hour instead. Either way it is the line worth asking about first on a small job, because on a small job it is most of the price.

Is it cheaper to be quoted a fixed price or an hourly rate?

For anything you can describe fully, a fixed price is usually better for you: the risk of the job taking longer than expected moves to the plumber. For fault finding, where nobody yet knows what is wrong, hourly is the honest arrangement and a fixed price would simply be padded to cover the unknown.

Do plumbers charge for a quote?

Quoting off a description is normally free. Attending to diagnose a fault is work, and is normally charged — often as a callout that is credited against the job if you go ahead. Ask which one you are getting before anyone drives over.

Why are two quotes for the same job so different?

Usually because they are not the same job. One has allowed for replacing a section of pipe and making good the wall; the other has priced the visible fix. Compare what each one says it includes, not the totals, and ask the cheaper one what happens if it is worse than it looks.
WHERE THESE NUMBERS COME FROM
The hourly rate is the range NovaPay uses across the site for this trade, and the typical job figure is the mid-market New Zealand price its assistant works from when it helps somebody set a budget. Both are the same numbers the product uses when you are inside it, published here rather than kept behind a sign-in.
What they are not: a survey, an average of anyones invoices, or what businesses on NovaPay charge. There is no dataset here large enough to claim any of those, so this page does not claim them. It also publishes no per-job price list, because a list like that would be exactly that claim in a more convincing format.
Treat the figures as an order of magnitude for planning. The real number for your job is a quote from somebody who has understood it.
