GARDENERS · WHAT IT COSTS

How much does a gardener cost in New Zealand?

Gardeners in New Zealand charge roughly $35 to $55 an hour, and most quote a price per visit once they have seen the section. A typical visit sits around $200, with a simple mow from about $80 and a serious one-off tidy-up running to $500 or more.

TYPICAL HOURLY RATE
$35 to $55 an hour
Labour with their own equipment. Green waste removal is normally charged per load on top, and it is the line people most often forget when comparing two quotes.
A TYPICAL JOB
$200
Most land between $80 and $500
The low end is a regular mow and tidy on a small section. The high end is a first visit to a garden that has got away, where most of the cost is what has to be taken away.
Both figures are national and GST inclusive. Neither is a quote: what you pay depends on your job, and the only way to know it is to have someone price that job.
WHAT CHANGES THE PRICE

Why two quotes for the same job differ

Green waste

Cutting is quick; disposal is not. A hedge trim can generate several trailer loads, each with a transfer station fee and the time to get there. Always ask whether the quote includes taking it away.

Regular or a rescue

A fortnightly visit is short and predictable. A first visit to an overgrown section is hours of catch-up and is normally quoted after a look rather than over the phone.

Hedges and their height

Hedge work above head height needs platforms or a different crew, and shelter belts are closer to arborist work than gardening. Both are priced well above a mow.

What counts as gardening

Mowing, edging, weeding and pruning are one rate. Planting plans, soil, mulch and structural work are landscaping and are priced as a project.
HOW TO PAY LESS

Three things that actually reduce the bill

Have a green waste bin or a compost heap if you can. Removing disposal from the quote is often the single largest saving available.
Book regular visits rather than calling when it looks bad. The regular version of the same garden takes a fraction of the time.
Do the clearing and let them do the skilled work. Pruning and shaping are worth paying for; dragging branches to the trailer is not.
COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT COST

Is green waste removal included?

Usually not in the hourly rate, and usually charged per load or per cubic metre. On a hedge trim or a big tidy it can be a substantial share of the total, so it is the first thing to confirm when two quotes look different.

What is the difference between a gardener and a landscaper?

A gardener maintains what is there — mowing, weeding, pruning, planting out. A landscaper builds: levels, paving, retaining, irrigation, planting plans. If your job changes the shape of the garden rather than its state, you want a landscaper and a project quote.

How often should I book a gardener?

Fortnightly through spring and summer suits most New Zealand sections, dropping to monthly over winter. A garden left for a season is a rescue job, and rescue jobs cost several ordinary visits.

Do gardeners bring their own tools?

Yes, and the rate assumes it — mower, line trimmer, blower, hand tools. Specialist equipment such as a stump grinder or an elevated platform is hired for the job and shows as a separate line.
WHERE THESE NUMBERS COME FROM
The hourly rate is the range NovaPay uses across the site for this trade, and the typical job figure is the mid-market New Zealand price its assistant works from when it helps somebody set a budget. Both are the same numbers the product uses when you are inside it, published here rather than kept behind a sign-in.
What they are not: a survey, an average of anyones invoices, or what businesses on NovaPay charge. There is no dataset here large enough to claim any of those, so this page does not claim them. It also publishes no per-job price list, because a list like that would be exactly that claim in a more convincing format.
Treat the figures as an order of magnitude for planning. The real number for your job is a quote from somebody who has understood it.
